Writing Style and Process for a Research Paper
Course Description:

This course complements 'The Writing Series: Writing and publishing a Research Paper (self-paced)' by providing a chance to discuss your issues around writing style and getting writing with other researchers and expert trainers.

This session will cover:

  • An approach to academic writing that ensures the right level of formality that promotes clarity and impact
  • Key grammatical tricks for making your writing less dense
  • Common mistakes
  • The stages of the writing process and what to do in each one

Please Note: You must have watched the videos on writing style and process in the self-paced course before attending this session. You will be expected to ask questions and discuss the course material during the session. You will therefore need a working computer microphone (and camera if possible), and to be in a location where you are able to talk. the videos will share shared with you by your course administrator.


Objectives:

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify and avoid several common pitfalls in academic writing style
  • Get yourself organised and motivated to get lots of writing done
Intended Audience:
This course is suitable for researchers at all levels, including those who are starting to write their first paper for a journal and those who have already written and published several papers. It can be taken by researchers in all areas of academia, but the examples used are mostly from science, technology, medicine and social sciences.
