Return to driving after foot and ankle surgery Clinical Supervisor: Mr Karan Malhotra, Mr Mathew Welck, Mr Shelain Patel, Mr Nick Cullen ϲ: Prof Rui Loureiro Project outline: Patients often ask both before and after foot and ankle surgery, when it will be safe to return to driving. Currently most clinicians tell patients they can return when they can safely perform an emergency stop manoeuvre. There are no quantitative guidelines as to when this is. Some will return too soon and pose a danger to themselves and others, and some will return too late, increasing the morbidity of their surgery. This project will be to use a pressure plate to calculate the force and speed required to safely emergency stop. This will need to be done on a variety of vehicles to produce statistical measures of central tendency. The student will then design an in-clinic test, to see if a patient can safely perform the manoeuvre. The study will then have a clinical facet whereby we can measure the average time to safely return to driving for a variety of foot and ankle procedures. This will help inform patients in clinical decision making. Outputs: Learn about the clinical problem at hand and work alongside the team. You will work alongside the team to develop quantitative guidelines to help better information for patients post surgery Clinical Observation Opportunity (e.g. attending operating theatres, outpatients to learn about the clinical problems linked to the project): You will have an opportunity to observe in outpatients clinics (with patient consent), and also in the operating theatres as well as in the orthotics department. !01BCDRSTV 񴪠}obbXKXK}hYhYOJQJ^JhYOJQJ^Jh9h9OJQJ^JhYhY5OJQJ^Jh9h95OJQJ^JhFs?5OJQJ^JhFs?OJQJ^Jht}OJQJ^Jh9OJQJ^JhFs?hFs?5OJQJ^JhFs?hG5OJQJ^JhY5OJQJ^JhG5OJQJ^JhP<5OJQJ^JhFs?ht}5OJQJ^J!"CD $a$gdt}$a$gdt} $&溰ģ溣hFs?hmOJQJ^Jh9OJQJ^JhFs?OJQJ^JhYOJQJ^JhYhYOJQJ^Jht}5OJQJ^JhFs?5OJQJ^JhFs?hm5OJQJ^J,1h.
